La Cultura | Diciembre: Fidel Castro (líder)

Last month, the SHS featured Pablo Neruda as our Person of the Month! This month we have decided that ex-Cuban leader, Fidel Castro (1926-2016), will be honored due to his recent death.
- Fidel Castro was born in Birán, Cuba.
- He was the dictator of Cuba, and he was also a leader of the military.
- He lead a revolution and established the first Communist party in the Western Hemisphere. He appointed himself leader of this party.
- He was the third of six children, including his two brothers, Raúl and Ramón; and three sisters, Angela, Emma and Agustina.
- Fidel Castro was educated at private Jesuit boarding schools. His family was wealthy, despite Cuba's overall state of poverty.
- He graduated from the University of Havana, also known as la Universidad de la Habana.
- Castro was the leader of the overthrow of the Batista dictatorship of Cuba (1959).
