Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo de Rivera is this month's Person of the Month! Born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her self-portraits. Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City--her home, known as "La Casa Azul", or "the Blue House". She was born July 6, 1906, died July 13, 1954. She married a man named Diego Rivera.

Kahlo described her memories of being in her childhood home as often "very, very sad". Both of her parents were often sick. She had siblings. At age six, Kahlo got polio, which made her right leg shorter and thinner than the left. The illness forced her to be isolated from her peers for months, and she was bullied. Kahlo gave lots of credit to her father for making her childhood life better. Due to polio, Kahlo began school later than her peers. She was also brought to a convent and homeschool throughout the duration of her education years. During the year 1922, Kahlo was accepted to the elite National Preparatory School, which was when women were just being allowed to attend. It was a prosperous school.

Later, she got into a bus accident. After her accident, Kahlo abandoned the idea of studying medicine and she began to paint in order to occupy herself during her three-month immobilization. She liked painting self-portraits Kahlo once said, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best".

Facts:

  • She was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón. El nombre Frieda comes from the German palabra Friede, which means paz. She dropped the e from her name around 1935, and became known as Frida.

  • She underwent 35 operations as a result of the bus accidente she had in her juventud.

  • Kahlo often added un mono simbólico to her works. In Mexican mythology, monkeys are symbols of lust, but Kahlo portrayed them as tierna and protectora.
